Bedfordshire contractor MIDA Civils has added 15 Kubota compact excavators to its rapidly growing fleet, as the company continues to build a leading reputation in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors across the East of England. Established in 2020, the business is relatively young, but benefits from the experience of a team that has been hand-picked for their knowledge and expertise within the civils area.
With more than 100 excavators in total, the MIDA fleet includes over 25 Kubotas, including a recent order for 10 of the 5-tonne U50-5s and five 8.5-tonne KX085-5 midis. Overall, the company runs a selection of Kubota models, from 1-8.5 tonnes. The latest machines have been added to help drive that business growth, although the company aims to renew its equipment on a four-year replacement cycle and some of the existing fleet will be replaced and updated over the coming years.
All of the Kubota excavators have been supplied and supported by local dealer Shellplant. As the business has grown, MIDA has developed its own plant division, opening dedicated workshops in 2025. However, the dealer continues to provide warranty support and parts back-up for the machines when required.
“Shellplant have always been a great support. We are bringing more and more of the work in-house, and they are supporting us in that process,” said Vicky Carr, Head of Plant and Procurement at MIDA.
MIDA Civils is involved in a wide range of works, from pre-construction services through to earthmoving and enabling works, groundworks and finish landscaping. Operating as far north as Peterborough and Oakham, south to North London and as far west as Oxford, the company relies on its equipment fleet, which is one of the reasons for the Kubota compact excavators. Self-delivery is a key strategy for the company and the plant fleet is solely employed on MIDA’s own projects, so productivity is a major purchasing consideration.
“Reliability is key, first and foremost,” said Daniel Clorley, Finance Director. “Driver familiarity, strong performance and residual values are also important factors in our machine choice.”
Both the new U50-5 models and the larger KX085-5s are ideal for a range of civil engineering operations, particularly in the housebuilding sector, where MIDA is proving particularly strong. Compact overall dimensions, including a zero tailswing design for the 5-tonne model, increase manoeuvrability on confined sites, while both models boast strong digging and lifting capabilities.
“I have enjoyed watching the growth of Mida Civils since the business started, with their ever-growing fleet of Kubota excavators and look forward to securing and supporting increasing Kubota business with them over the coming years,” said Tom Hayward, Sales Manager at Shellplant.
