Lucy Allsop is a placement student working within Kubota (UK)’s agricultural and ground care machinery business.
Lucy is currently enjoying 12-month’s practical experience with the company, as part of a four-year degree course at Harper Adams University, studying agricultural engineering. So far, she has experienced both the construction and after-sales departments, within the business, and has recently joined the agricultural and ground care machinery division.
“This has definitely been the right choice for me, though it’s also been a steep learning curve,” says Lucy. “Back in Bromyard, Herefordshire, my grandparents clearly influenced my future, as I spent a lot of time on their small holding while growing up. This is where I got stuck in with beef and sheep, and I soon decided that the agricultural industry is where I want to spend my future.”
While Lucy’s interest in agricultural engineering is about keeping her options open and could include working on the spanners from the back of a van, or diving head-long into a transmission rebuild, or exploring new concepts among R&D and futuristic farming projects.
“I’d really like to get stuck into some of the conceptual ideas and see how I can influence machinery developments of the future,” says Lucy. “And spending time with Kubota for my placement has really been an eye-opener so far.”
From dealer events, shows, marketing activities and workshop tasks, Lucy’s experience at Kubota (UK) continues to deliver.
“It’s certainly a career path I would recommend to others – there’s a great team here, that is happy to help and advise, but also one that lets you take responsibility too,” adds Lucy. “I’d be very happy to return to the business after graduating, to see where my career could go. It would be great to join the graduate training programme.”
Away from work, Lucy plays rugby and has also joined Risborough Young Farmers.
“I do enjoy getting out and about,” says Lucy. “And when I do spend weekends back home, I also get to enjoy horse riding.”
